COMMENT:

Tottenham Hotspur travel to Goodison Park after the disappointment of being knocked-out of the Football League (Carling) Cup at the Quarter Final stage by Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford. Harry Redknapp had stated before the game that he regards the Premier League as Tottenham's first priority this season and perhaps this might have had an effect on the player's performances, which were certainly below par. The good form Spurs have shown in the League this season continued at Villa Park where a 1-1 draw was earned against Villa in a match which was dominated by Tottenham. That draw lifted Spurs into third place, ahead of Arsenal who were soundly beaten at home by Chelsea 3-0.

Everton's form this season has been a major cause for concern, as the club have slipped badly compared with their good performances last season. They come into Sunday's match with Spurs after winning 1-0 away on Wednesday night in Greece against AEK Athens in the Europa League (formerly UEFA Cup) to progress to the Round of 32 thanks to a Diniyar Bilyaletdinov goal. Everton's recent League results have been poor, including three consecutive defeats to Manchester United, Hull City and most recently 0-2 to Liverpool in their home Merseyside derby. David Moyes will be anxious to avoid a fourth successive League defeat to Spurs, which would put Everton well and truly into a relegation fight.

During the Premier League era, Spurs have generally had the upper hand over Everton but the most recent results have gone in Everton's favour, including a run of four unbeaten League games. The sequence came to an end earlier this season when Spurs beat Everton 2-0 in the League Cup fourth round with goals from Tom Huddlestone and Robbie Keane. Last season's League games saw Everton take four points out of six with a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane followed by a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park.

The draw for the third round of the FA Cup was kind for both teams with Everton given a home tie against Carlisle United and Tottenham Hotspur drawn at home to face Peterborough United.

TEAM NEWS:

Everton's Johnny Heitinga is suspended after he picked up his fifth booking of the season last weekend. Sylvain Distin and Dan Gosling are doubtful with hamstring strains, while Leon Osman faces a fitness test on his injured ankle.

It's a case of 'as you were' for Harry Redknapp as he prepares the squad for Sunday's trip to Everton. The manager will again be without the services of Jonathan Woodgate (groin), Ledley King (hamstring), Luka Modric (fractured fibula) and Carlo Cudicini (pelvis, wrist). Niko Kranjcar is available again after being cup-tied for Tuesday night's Carling Cup tie at United.

"I made five changes at Old Trafford and everyone who started last week is okay, I've the same group available for Everton," reported Harry after training on Friday. The news remains positive on Luka, who has been training with the Academy squad at Spurs Lodge. "Luka's getting closer," said Harry. "He's training with the youth team at the moment and hopefully he'll be back in a few weeks, ready to play. He's a top player for us and we'd love to have him back and playing again."

Giovani dos Santos is also back in full training after his recent ankle injury. "Gio's just short of match practice now," added Harry. "He's getting fitter but he needs a game. "He's been out a long time and I'm looking forward to when he's fully fit. He's a good young player and he was in great form when he got injured. It was a big blow both for us and for him when he got injured.

MATCH FACTS:

Head-to-head

• Tottenham beat Everton 2-0 in the Carling Cup fourth round this season thanks to goals from Tom Huddlestone and Robbie Keane.

• This fixture has finished 0-0 in the last two encounters at Goodison Park.

• In 17 seasons of Premier League encounters between these sides, Tottenham have won 17 matches, Everton five and there have been 12 draws.

Everton

• Everton have won just one of their last eight league matches and haven't won at home since 20 September when they beat Blackburn.

LAST LEAGUE MATCH LINE-UPS:

Everton (L 0-2 v Liverpool, h):

Howard, Hibbert, Yobo (Neill 86), Distin, Baines, Pienaar, Heitinga, Fellaini, Bilyaletdinov, Cahill (Yakubu 82), Jo (Saha 66).

Subs Not Used: Nash, Gosling, Coleman, Baxter.

Tottenham Hotspur (D 1-1 v Aston Villa, a):

Gomes, Corluka, Dawson, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Huddlestone, Palacios (Jenas 66), Kranjcar (Keane 78), Defoe, Crouch.

Subs Not Used: Alnwick, Hutton, Bale, Bentley, Rose.

MARK LAWRENSON'S PREDICTION (BBC):

Everton had a really good result on Wednesday but it came at a cost and while Jo, apparently, might be OK, the addition of Dan Gosling and Sylvain Distin to their long list of injuries will not help them. Tottenham, meanwhile, looked good for half an hour against Manchester United in the Carling Cup but as soon as they went behind they fell away, the doubts crept in and looked like the same old Spurs. This has draw written all over it, for me.

Verdict: Everton 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

LAST TIME WE MET...

Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Everton

27th October 2009, Football League (Carling) Cup, 4th Round, White Hart Lane

Tottenham shrugged off Everton to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

Robbie Keane wasted a Spurs chance when his shot hit a post but Tom Huddlestone atoned for his team-mate by half-volleying in a David Bentley cross.

Keane earned a penalty after a foul by Sylvain Distin and, after Tim Howard had saved his initial strike, he scored following a goalmouth melee.

Everton rarely looked like staging a comeback as Spurs saw out the game.

The main disappointment for Spurs was the form of Roman Pavlyuchenko, who made a rare start in the first ever meeting between the two sides in the League Cup.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp had a visit from Russia manager Guus Hiddink recently to discuss how to get the best out of the striker.

Pavlyuchenko is propping up the Spurs pecking order of forwards and is also struggling to keep his starting place in Hiddink's side.

And, after Keane had struck the post with a shot, he wasted two chances betraying a lack of confidence after Redknapp had called for a more aggressive approach.

Pavlyuchenko was through on goal after a Lucas Neill clearance struck Keane and fell into his path, but he hurried his effort and shot wide from 20 yards.

He also got on the end of an Alan Hutton cross to the near post only to steer his strike wide.

Everton were a team nursing a severe injury crisis and they tried to paper over their problems with their work ethic.

The closest they came to a goal was when a hooked Louis Saha shot was tipped over by Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes, while an unmarked Jonny Heitinga headed wide.

However, after Huddlestone arrived into the Toffees box to put the finishing touch to a Bentley cross, Spurs always looked like they had the beating of the visitors.

There was little doubt Distin's challenge on Keane merited a spot-kick but there was more than a touch of fortune about the goal eventually scored from it.

Everton keeper Howard saved the initial penalty as well as follow-up strikes from Bentley and Gareth Bale before Keane powered in from close range to secure the home side's victory.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp on David Bentley:

"He's got to play like that and put that effort in. Aaron (Lennon) has played so well, he's not had the opportunity.

"His attitude was not as good in training as it could be and I spoke to him about that.

"He accepts that and is determined to put that right."
